I played last year. I deposited a couple of times, I think, on FanDuel. $20 here, $20 there.....not more than 3 times, if even that. I enjoyed the NFL season. I learned a little about constructing lineups. I don't even know if I was showing some profit, but I got lucky in about week 5 and hit a 2nd place finish in a moderate tourney. I think I won about $200. So, I haven't deposited since and played the rest of the 2014 NFL season, most of the 2015 MLB season, and am now starting on the 2015 NFL season. Granted, MLB took about $60 off that roll......but I learned baseball has WICKED variance. Also, the games get tougher the later the season drags on. The cash lines become tougher to hit.
I'm a low-hanging fruit guy, so I plan to bow out after the All-Star Break next season. I'm trying to maximize this on the NFL season by playing heavy early, while all the buzz is going on, and I'll taper back if I notice games getting tougher. Like a poker table, I don't think I'm the best in the world......but I can promise you I'm not the worst. If it starts to look like I'm the worst, I'm out. I will study, relearn, and come back a little better.
Week 1's results weren't great. I had 10 unique lineups I really liked for various reasons. I put a 5:1 ratio of cash game to GPP on them. And, only one lineup did well. Some did "ok" and some did pretty crappy. I put about $65 on the line of my $167 and returned about $45 for what was a $21 loss for the week. Not terrible, but not good.
In DFS, I sort of play the cash games to grind up small, cumulative wins while entering each lineup in a bigger tourney in case it goes crazy. By "bigger" I'm only talking about 4k player events or smaller. I don't have designs on beating 250k people with some magical lineup, dropping $20 on the entry fee, and taking home the big cardboard check like those guys on tv. That crap is for action-junkies imo, and I'm not one. When it comes to gambling (and let's face it, this is mostly gambling), I'm a pretty mellow dude.
I've said it before, though, I DO try and win when I play. I'm not a fan of losing. I AM pretty competitive. So, in the interest of gathering more info, I might share some sites I like. I did just deposit $50 on DraftKings to trigger a free VIP Package from a site I follow. This package unlocks weekly newsletters, a couple eBooks, and some specific player recommendations from a winning DFS player whose thoughts I really enjoyed last year. He got smart and started charging for his advice. To avoid the $40 membership fee, I dropped $50 into DK with a 100% match on the money (potential to build my $50 to $100 if I hold my bankroll long enough) to keep my money mine. If there's value in the VIP info, I'll gladly do it again next year and pay for it. So, we'll see. You may get some reviews of the package in here, too.
So, that's it. Week 1 in the books.....down $21. Week 2 coming. DraftKings now in play. Information and player picks on the way. Hopefully, things hold up and I post a win or 10. My goal is to play 3 lineups and maybe toss a couple upside lineups into some tourneys and see what happens. I will likely put about 25% of my current bankroll in play ($35 on FD and $15 on DK). Let's roll!
